Eating Local- What it is and Why It Matters
Wednesdays, Nov 7 & 14, 2007 (go to  www.villageU.com, click on Current Events)

 While our supermarkets overflow with an incredible variety of products, few Americans know much about where and how their food was grown and processed. What would the big food corporations prefer you never know about nutrition, the chemicals they use, the energy they consume, and the way they treat workers and farm animals?  Katherine Kelly of the KC Center for Urban Agriculture and the Growing Growers Program and John Kurmann of the KC Food Circle have answers for you as well as a real alternative.  Please join them for a two-part workshop as they explore the benefits of eating foods grown locally and organically by small farmers.

Earthkeeping--Beyond our Enlightened Self-Interest

Tuesdays, Oct 16 thru Nov 6, 2007 (go to  www.villageU.com, click on Theology)

This series on the environment engages people at the theological/ethical level and seeks to help people define/understand themselves as people called to image God on earth.  It focuses on our relationship with the natural world which surrounds and sustains us.

Rev. Richard Randolph (St. Paul’s School of Theology) will present the first class on Oct 16.  Dr. Rev. David Wheeler (Senior Minister of First Baptist Church in Portland, OR, and former Theologian-in-Residence at Village Church during 1995-2000) will present the second class on Oct 23, followed by Rev. Peter Sawtell (Eco-justice Ministries in Denver, CO) on Oct 30.  Dennis Murphey, the Chief Environmental Officer of Kansas City, is scheduled for the final

class on Nov 6.

The first three classes will focus on why, with each speaker discussing an area of expertise within the environmental study movement.  The final class will focus on how--specific ways to faithfully practice sustainability, earthkeeping, and creation care.

Simple Living

Wednesdays, Oct 10 thru 24, 2007

(go to  www.villageU.com & click on Spirituality)

6:30-8:00pm. Room 133.

Compelling reasons to live simply abound: it helps the earth, saves money, lessens the stress in our lives, allows us to focus more on the spiritual, and frees resources for the poor. It is a movement of the Spirit in our times. Yet it isn’t that easy to do in our consumer-driven society. Come get the information, motivation and resources to move in this direction. Using a participatory, adult learning model, we will explore the vision, spiritual values, attitudes, and practices related to simple living. You CAN lead a simpler life more in harmony with God, nature and your truest self. Come see how. Taught by Carol Meyer, an educator and spiritual guide with an MA in Theology. October 10, 17 & 24.

Step It Up 2007
Saturday, April 14, 1:00 PM

Nelson-Atkins Southmoreland Park, KC, MO
Author/scholar Bill McKibben has initiated a new mass-protest climate movement for 2007. The stated purpose of the event is to bring as many people out on a single day to insist that Congress take action to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 80% by 2050. Here's what he said January 08, 2007. "The most important question about global warming right now is: what do i do once I've changed the damned lightbulbs? And one small answer is Step It Up2007." Rather than burning fuel to get masses of people to DC to march on Washington, McKibben is proposing people gather in iconic places around the country such as the Grand Tetons or Hawaii's coral reefs, as well as local church steps, city parks and country barns. He wants us to raise our banners, take a photo and email it to Washington. Media coverage would be a plus. The KC metro event is being organized by the local Sierra Club and others. For more, go to the website, Step It Up Kansas City Area! or www.StepItUp2007.org.
